In the city neighborhoods off Monroe Ave, the hard part is access — narrow driveways, no room to set the truck. Out here it flips. There's plenty of space, and that's exactly the problem. The old farmhouse lots off Buffalo Rd and Union St have open-grown silver maples that spent sixty years with nothing around them, so they built wide crowns and weak co-dominant leader unions. Nothing upwind to break the gusts either. Those are the trees that drop a half-ton limb on a garage roof in a summer squall.
The newer subdivisions off Chili-Riga Center Rd are a different job — younger plantings, tighter to the house, usually a bucket or crane pick over a fence rather than a straight fell. Down along the Black Creek floodplain we see a lot of saturated root plates, so a tree that looks fine can lean the week after a wet stretch. We work the Chili Center area, Paul Rd, out toward Northampton Park, and up near the airport approach where crane height gets a second look before we set up.

Do you handle the big open maples on the old farm lots?
Yes — those are most of our takedowns out here. Depending on the drop zone we'll either rig it down in sections or bring in a crane. If the tree is sound and it's only a couple of bad limbs, a reduction and some cabling on the weak union is often the cheaper call.
Is a crane a problem near the airport flight path?
It's a height-awareness thing, not a roadblock. Residential crane picks in the northeast corner of town sit well under anything that matters, and we plan the boom height before the truck leaves the yard.
