Half the calls out here are the same tree. Silver maple and ash went in when the subdivisions off Calkins, Erie Station and Lehigh Station were built, and they're aging out at once. Ash are the brittle ones. Silver maples split at a co-dominant crotch and hang a limb over a garage roof.
Soil matters here too. The flat clay near Black Creek and Red Creek holds water, so after a wet stretch a big tree doesn't snap — the root plate lifts and the trunk leans. A heaved crescent of turf means it's already failed, it just hasn't finished. Jefferson Road and 15A work gets off-hours scheduling or traffic control.
